A look back...
1971 to present.
Since its inception in 1971
In 1970, a group of civic minded individuals helped form the initial organization. It was a youth center/coffeehouse run by volunteers until the first directors were announced in 1983. Now known as the Granville Rec Commission (GRC), it continued to operate for the next 27 years by Directors who worked out of home-based offices. In June of 1973, a .5 mill levy was passed for 5 years, as did the .4 mill renewal in 1978 and again in 1983.
A look back at Granville Recreation District
The GRD has not increased its current 1 mill operating levy since 2005 (at the time still the GRC). Since its creation in 2010, the GRD has completed Raccoon Valley Park (RVP), added a maintenance division, reconstructed the Wildwood Playground, won the Ohio Parks & Recreation Capital Improvement Project of the Year award (Rotary Bridge Project), introduced on-line registration, and doubled program participation.
A look back at Capital Projects
Since 2010 the GRD has worked with Licking County’s private business sector, local public service groups and other strategic partners to stretch our tax dollars and complete over $3,000,000 in capital projects. Projects including, but not limited to, RVP Phase 2, the Rotary Bridge, and the Wildwood Playground renovation project.
Update on Community Center/Outdoor Pool
In 2019 the GRD began community discussions to launch a community engagement process to investigate constructing a community center and outdoor pool. Although that initiative continues to be our highest priority, with the current global pandemic, the Board of Trustees have decided to pause the issue. We do, however, plan to continue the discussion and engagement process, so when the time is right, the GRD will be prepared to present the community with a project that will create value for all residents in the near future.
